I feel like this has so far been the best book in the series. But I also feel like I say that about every book in this series. It's just that good of a series.
In this one we're stuck on some hellish version of Magic the Gathering and Yu-Gi-Oh, battling monsters (and each other) with decks of cards, while just trying to survive another level, to get down to the 9th level and to the faction wars, and really instill the fear of Carl into the aliens who made humanity's destruction into a TV show.
This is such an intense read, and the last 50 or so pages of this book? Emotional damage. When you think the situation can't possibly get much worse than what it already is, you're getting shoved into a plot twist so cruel, it makes starting the next book just plain stressful, and yet you can't help but immediately pick up This Inevitable Ruin. I've never read a series so addictive as this, and it's all thanks to the characters and their growth, the insane plots and the twists, and the humor and heart these books have. Genuinely can't recommend these enough.
