In the books, the scientist Dr Ransom – a character who was loosely based on Tolkien himself – is abducted on a spaceship to the red planet Mars and then to the paradise world of Venus. The third much longer book is based on Earth, a dark fantasy involving a sinister society run by Ransom’s old adversaries that culminates with the resurrection of Merlin from under Bragdon Wood. This new collector’s edition – with a first print run of just 2,000 copies – is the perfect opportunity to investigate Lewis’s often-forgotten science fiction. Bound in two volumes and housed in a slipcase, this printing also includes as a bonus the opening chapters of Lewis’s abandoned sequel, The Dark Tower.
