It explores\u003cbr\u003ethe interplay between ethno-national and economic factors, and\u003cbr\u003efurthermore analyses what social mechanisms lead to and explain\u003cbr\u003einclusion, exclusion and annihilation. The empirical results show that citizenship in both countries was\u003cbr\u003eseparated in an ethnically hierarchical way, making minorities secondclass\u003cbr\u003ecitizens. This process of ethnic, and finally racial, exclusion\u003cbr\u003emarked the whole period, culminating in the annihilation of Jews\u003cbr\u003ethroughout most of Hungary in 1944. The overall thesis is that economic nationalizing through the\u003cbr\u003eexclusion of minorities induces vicious circles of ethnic bifurcation,\u003cbr\u003epolitical instability and unfavorable conditions for achieving\u003cbr\u003eeconomic prosperity.
