Creating Renaissance Criticism intervenes in the field of creative criticism and rethinks its de facto separation from other modes of literary study by refusing to distinguish creative approaches from historical scholarship, instead seeking new ways to connect them. The essays in this volume combine two elements: a historically specific and critically grounded account of a feature of early modern reading or writing; and a demonstration of what it might mean to allow that feature to shape the form that criticism takes. In this way, the study of renaissance literature is itself shown to generate creative possibilities for criticism. This volume sees the current moment of profound uncertainty as to the nature and status of writing as being also a moment of tremendous opportunity. As scholars, students, and all people work out what the future of writing will look like, this will require both reflecting upon the kinds of writing that we produce, and exploring possible connections between forms that are often opposed to one another: critical and creative, academic and experimental, scholarly and personal.
