The 3-foot-gauge railway ran through some of the most spectacular scenery in Ireland while also having an inner-city terminus at Derry. Its fleet of large powerful tank engines was joined in 1906 by a railcar, the first of a large fleet of petrol and diesel railcars which the County Donegal Railways Joint Committee made widespread use of. The railway’s distinctive character was forged by the people as much as the scenery and rolling stock – notably Henry Forbes, who ran the railway for much of its existence. Forbes’ push for economy and encouragements to staff kept the railway in operation despite turbulent times during the Irish revolutionary period, with the railway continually hampered in operations as it crossed the border between Ireland and Northern Ireland on two of its lines.
